Nostalgic South African Brunch for a Special 70th Birthday

Nostalgic South African Brunch for a Special 70th Birthday

This Nostalgic South African Brunch was right up my alley because I am a sucker for anything vintage or retro.

I get very nostalgic on Sunday afternoons when I think back to my mom’s roast chicken, potatoes, rice, beans and sweet pumpkin. I get nostalgic when I drive through my old neighbourhood which I do often as I still live in the same town. And I get nostalgic when I listen to music from yesteryear, especially from the 80’s, coming of age an all! I know, don’t judge me! 🙂

I thoroughly enjoyed setting up and styling this intimate table for Lalieu’s mom, Joey, who celebrated her 70th birthday. Because of the lockdown regulations we served individually packaged cupcakes and brunch boxes, more on that later!

MY PERSONAL FAVOURITE ELEMENTS WERE:

  • my late grandmother’s old cook books
  • my late uncle’s old school diary
  • all the vintage tins, some I inherited, some I picked up at second hand stores and flea markets and some were gifts
  • the Afrikaans vinyl records
  • and lastly the beautiful Proteas in vintage tins and Consol jars

The individually packaged brunch boxes contained a croissant with ham & cheese, mixed nuts and dried fruit, a fresh fruit kebab and strawberry yoghurt, muesli & fresh berry parfait with honey as well as a fresh fruit juice.

For dessert we served Melktert Cupcakes in individual little boxes with personalized thank you tags.
